The Awful Truth is a 1937 screwball romantic comedy directed by Leo McCarey. Irene Dunne plays Louise, a witty socialite who begins to suspect her fiancé Ted (Cary Grant) of infidelity, just as she herself begins to fall for a smooth rival suitor. As both chase new romances to win the battle of the sexes, chaotic misunderstandings and rapid-fire banter ensue. The film’s dizzy pace, sharp dialogue, and sparkling chemistry between Dunne and Grant helped define the era’s comedic gold.
