Born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, she grew up in a multicultural environment with Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage. Her passion for performance led her to study dance, though an early interest in acting soon took precedence. She gained early recognition with roles in "Center Stage" (2000) and "Crossroads" (2002). Rising to stardom with "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" (2003), she is best known for roles in "Avatar" and as Gamora in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" series.
