Set in Taichung, The Great Buddha+ follows a night-shift security guard and his friend as they film the lives of people around them, only to uncover a web of corruption, violence and social hypocrisy. The film blends noir sensibilities with deadpan humor, using stark black-and-white imagery overlaid with magenta graphics to dissect the cruelty and moral rot behind everyday life in contemporary Taiwan. Huang Hsin-yao crafts a bold critique of class divisions and media voyeurism through a patient, documentary-like vibe.
