Tarnation is an autobiographical, experimental documentary by Jonathan Caouette, assembled from decades of 8mm and home video footage, video diaries, and audio recordings. It charts Caouette’s tense, often painful upbringing, his mother's mental illness, and his search for personal identity as he stitches fragments of memory into a cinematic self-portrait. The film challenges conventional storytelling with a collage-like, intimate reflection on family, trauma, and resilience.
