Tales from the Golden Age is a 2009 Romanian-German-Italian anthology film that weaves five short stories about life under Ceaușescu’s late-1980s dictatorship. Directed by Cristian Mungiu with fellow Romanian filmmakers Razvan Marculescu, Ioana Uricaru, Constantin Popescu and Hanno Höfer, the film blends satire, social realism and deadpan humor to illuminate how ordinary Romanians cope with shortages, censorship, rumors and superstition. Its episodic structure, natural performances and lush period detail offer a humane, wry portrait of a country in flux.
