Freaks (1932) by Tod Browning blends romance and social critique within a traveling circus. A beautiful trapeze artist, Lulu, schemes to marry and murder Hans, a gentle dwarf favorite of the freak show, to steal his fortune. When the trained freaks learn of the plot, they confront the couple in a tense, morally charged finale. The film's uncompromising depictions of physical difference and human cruelty provoked censorship and intense controversy on release.
