A Scanner Darkly is a 2006 American science fiction thriller film directed by Richard Linklater and based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick. The film is set in a dystopian future where America has lost the war on drugs, and a powerful new drug called Substance D has engulfed the populace. The story follows an undercover cop, Bob Arctor, who becomes addicted to the drug and begins to lose his identity. As he struggles with his dual roles, the line between reality and illusion blurs.
