Initially involved in the counterculture movement of the 1960s, he became a prominent member of the San Francisco Mime Troupe. Transitioning to film in the late 1970s, he gained recognition for roles in "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Cross Creek." Known for his distinctive voice, he has narrated numerous documentaries, including several by Ken Burns. He is also an accomplished writer, with several books to his name.
