He gained recognition for his role in "The Great Debaters" (2007) and further acclaim for "Red Tails" (2012). He made his directorial debut with "The Birth of a Nation" (2016), which he also wrote and starred in. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.
