An Austrian-born actor, he began his career on the European stage before transitioning to Hollywood in the early 20th century. He became known for his character roles in numerous films throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Often cast in supporting roles, he brought a distinctive presence to films such as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Heidi." He also lent his voice to the character of Geppetto in Disney's classic animated film "Pinocchio." His career spanned several decades before he passed away in 1956.
